Trauma-Informed Dietetic Care

Welcome to Trauma-Informed Dietetic Care, a Nervous System-informed Course for Nutrition Professionals, we are so glad you're here to check out if this course is a good fit for you!

As health professionals, we care about our clients. We want to be present. We want to understand their experiences (and often we won't, which can leave us feeling stuck and overwhelmed). Developing a deeper understanding of how we neurobiologically respond in times of stress can support us to develop insight into our own experiences, and importantly, how to soothe and nurture ourselves. In turn, these skills can be brought into practice as we provide environments where our clients can feel an enhanced sense of safety in our presence so that over time, they may feel safer in their own bodies.

Why is the nervous system inextricably linked to our roles as Nutrition Professionals?

It has traditionally been viewed that the role of the Dietitian is very separate to that of the therapist in mental health, but what we are now understand is that nutrition-related concerns, eating behaviours and mental health are inextricably linked. We will be seeing people whose nervous systems are sending messages through their food-related behaviours and with insight, we can support our clients to decode and understand their experiences. But first, we need to become more familiar with our own nervous systems and learn at a pace that supports us to safely introduce and integrate practices. This course aims to expand your scope of practice, but we will not be introducing you to anything that is not safely within a Dietitians wheelhouse.

Have you ever felt curious about

  • How our body signals "safe" and "unsafe" through our food and eating behaviours?
  • What's going on our body when we're feeling completely overwhelmed or burned out?
  • How we can build skills to be a valuable resource for our clients, ourselves and each other?

Then this is the course for you.

Together, we will step you through the essential elements of understanding trauma and trauma-informed care, supporting you to understand how the nervous system responds to signals of safety and danger. You may work with people who have named their experiences as trauma, or those who have not but have really fraught relationships with food, eating and their body.

Developing an awareness of our body's most intuitive and wise responses, we can support our clients to decode their experiences rather than avoiding them or sinking into shame spirals. We can also - very valuably - understand our own system so we don't go into "dietitian-fixing-mode" the moment we feel stuck, confused or frustrated. We can name what's going on for ourselves, and use specific practices which support us to stay present and steady.

We are your hosts - Tracy Brown and Fiona Sutherland - and our hopes for you is that this course reinvigorates your practice & opens up new possibilities for you and your work. We hope you learn more about your clients and our communities, and yourself. We are passionate about nervous system-informed work and are here to support you in your learning.
