Learning about gender-affirming care is essential for healthcare providers to provide high-quality, compassionate, and effective care to all patients, alongside their gender identity or expression. We care, and want to be more welcoming but might also feel unsure what this might sound and look like in ways which don't overburden our clients in their time of need.
This is a series featuring speakers with both lived and professional experience, and will include the following learning objectives:
- Key terminology (such as identity labels)
- LGBTQIA+ history and demographics
- Health and wellbeing risks, barriers and supports
- Heath service access and Community support
- Minority Stress (politics), address Internalised bias and stigma
- Identify common nutrition related issues experienced by trans and gender diverse communities
- Understand how cisnormativity shows up in standard nutrition and dietetic practice
- Adapt nutrition recommendations and interventions to meet the needs of trans and gender diverse people.
- Understand the role of hormonal and other medical therapies in gender affirming care
- Identify the effects, potential side effects and risks of medical and surgical therapies
- Support clients that may need specific nutritional interventions or monitoring due to their medical/hormonal therapies
- Recognise some of the intersections of gender dysphoria and minority stress, with body dysmorphia and eating disorders
- Recognise and undertake the important role of advocacy as part of your gender diverse clients’ support network as they navigate the medical system
